The JRPG genre is known for many things, and one of them is for having plots that are hard to follow. The stories in these games almost always try to do a lot… maybe too much. Still, a lot of people love this genre because the stories are so amazing. The vast majority of JRPGs have plots with a lot of levels that are very interesting to figure out.
There are a lot of games with stories and plays that are so complex that the player has to do a lot to figure out the whole picture. Sometimes, players have to play through the game more than once to find everything it has to offer. The following games are well-known for this design choice. Final Fantasy Type-0 is a great spin-off game in this famous JRPG series. It has a more serious tone than the main games in the series. This game shows all of the horrible things that can happen in war, and the ending still makes many fans cry.
This game’s New Game+ mode is pretty cool. It has new story cutscenes, different events, Expert trails, and a lot more things to do. Because the game’s story is so complicated, diehard fans will want to start a new run as soon as possible.
Persona 3 Portable
Persona 3 Portable makes a very unique and interesting change that is great for both new and old fans. It adds a female main character and new bosses, as well as Social Links, new story events, a new user interface, a higher level of difficulty, and new romance lines.
All of these things are enough to make a lot of players want to try this game again. Even though the Portable version of this popular JRPG is missing some features, it has more than enough changes to satisfy most fans.
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Trigger is one of the best JRPGs ever made. It has a lot of material and one of the most popular casts of characters in JRPG history. This game is known for letting players fight the final boss whenever they want. Depending on when players decided to fight Lavos, there are many different endings.
The game’s last boss is, of course, very hard, and most people will only be able to beat him in New Game +. Chrono Trigger has many endings, including a secret developer room ending that can only be accessed when Lavos is defeated with only Crono and Marle.
Eternal Sonata
Eternal Sonata is an interesting JRPG that more people should play. Fans can only wait and hope that this game will be updated for newer systems, but the fact that there hasn’t been any news about this has been very disappointing.
This is a great trip into the mind of Frederic Chopin just before he died. After beating the game the first time, players can play it again in Encore Mode. This mode makes foes tougher and gives you access to a lot of side quests.
Vagrant Story
Vagrant Story is one of the most underrated JRPGs. It came out at the end of the PS1’s life, so it didn’t get a lot of attention. The game is a lot of fun to play, and the fact that you have to aim for enemy limbs and body parts makes it even more fun.
In this new playthrough, players can open the rood inverse doors to get into new dungeons. End-game enemies are in these areas, so players should be very careful as they walk down these hallways.
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 is a great game, and the ending is pretty sad. Going through this scary event twice can be hard to watch, but this New Game + does give you access to the game’s hardest superboss.
Minerva’s side task is no joke, and players need to be ready for one of the longest and hardest bosses in the whole game. This fight of attrition can be won, though, thanks to all the gear and experience players have gained over multiple playthroughs.
Parasite Eve
Parasite Eve is one of the best JRPGs for the PS1, and its turn-based survival horror game is a lot of fun. The disgusting body horror in this game is hypnotising, and since the game is short, players won’t get tired of the fast-paced story at any point.
The Chrysler Building can be played when the game is played for the second time in EX Mode. This endgame cave has 70 floors and is quite difficult, with a superboss hiding the real end of the game.
Persona 5
Persona 5 is one of the best modern JRPGs of all time. It has a great group of characters, an interesting story, and beautiful art. Even though this game is very long, most people won’t find one run to be enough, and they’ll be right.
When you play Persona 5 a second time, you can unlock two superbosses. The best Persona, and some special Confidant events. Even though these bonuses aren’t huge. Players who liked the game will take any chance they can get to play it again.
Chrono Cross
Chrono Cross is a popular follow-up to Chrono Trigger, and it has a lot of party members to choose from. The sheer number of these recruits is pretty amazing and sometimes hits Suikoden levels.
In fact, if a player wants to add every possible party member to their team, they have to play through Eggy Car game twice. Chrono Cross is one of the most ambitious JRPGs. And its recent re-release on modern systems means that players can finally try it out.
Final Fantasy 4
Final Fantasy 4 is a great game, and one of the best things about it is how Cecil Harvey’s character grows and changes. The DS Remake makes the game harder and gives you a new and different reason to play it again.
Players can bring over all their items from their first playthrough, and stealing the item Dark Matter from the game’s final boss, Zeromus, opens up a dungeon with some of the hardest monsters and bosses in the whole game. Given how hard Final Fantasy 4 is on the DS already, it’s clear that players will need to be very strong and well-prepared to get through this tough area after the game.
